Introducing EU-compatible MSc Degree in Engines and Aircraft Power Systems

Politecnico di Torino (PdT), IT

The Politecnico di Torino offers excellence in technology and acknowledges its historical context. It promotes the ability to carry out theoretical or applied research, and also the capacity to achieve concrete and reliable productive processes or organize services and facilities. Attention is paid to practicality without forgetting design, and striving for quality while keeping costs under control. At the Politecnico, today's needs are analyzed to design a sustainable tomorrow. By the end of his or her degree, a Politecnico di Torino graduate has gained a vast, many-sided range of skills and knowledge. Education here goes beyond a technical knowledge of engineering and architecture. Students acquire competence in the interdisciplinary nature of the various fields of the contemporary scientific world, while still aware of the needs of people and society.

Engineers and Architects are the main professional figures at the Politecnico di Torino. Both have strategic planning and a common interdisciplinary approach. The range of studies is broad and ever widening: it spans space, environment and land, telecommunications, information, energy, mechanics, electronics, chemistry, automation, electrical engineering, industrial design, architecture and building, restoration. They are very different subjects requiring different study methods. Both theory and technical planning are needed: method as well as inventiveness.

Kungl Tekniska Högskolan (KTH), Stockholm, SE

The Royal Institute of Technology (Kungl Tekniska Högskolan) was founded in 1827 and is the largest of Swedish technical universities. KTH is responsible for one-third of Sweden’s capacity for engineering studies and technical research at post-secondary level. KTH is an international institution with established research and educational exchanges all over the world, especially in Europe, the USA, Australia and South-East Asia.

KTH Aeronautical and Vehicle Engineering, is the result of a merger between the department of Aeronautics and the department of Vehicle Engineering. The staff of the department consists of 90 employees (all staff statistics are as of Feb 2003), 77 of these being academic researchers with 8 full professors, 4 adjunct professors from industry, 8 senior lecturers, 3 junior lecturers, 15 senior researchers and 38 graduate students. In addition about 10 PhD students are active at the department on a part time basis while working in industry or research institutes. The administrative staff consists of 5 persons while 5 technicians provide technical support.

The staff teaches in 27 annual courses on undergraduate level, with approximately 1150 student encounters every year. We are responsible for 5 MSc programmes: Aeronautical, Lightweight Structures, Naval Systems, Sound and Vibration, Vehicle Engineering, engaging about 100 students per year. Mechanical properties such as stiffness, strength, creep and fatigue and fracture mechanic data are determined through the use of internationally acknowledged standards (ISO, ASTM, DIN). In parallel the department is able to assist clients in the structural analyses process using numerical and analytical tools such as e.g. Ansys, Abaqus, Dyna 3D, IDEAS and Nastran. The Department of Aeronautical and Vehicle Engineering also operates a low-speed wind tunnel with excellent flow quality.

KTH and Politecnico di Torino (PdT) have been partners since 1990 in CLUSTER (Consortium Linking Universities of Science and Technology for Education and Research). CLUSTER is a network of leading European Universities of Technology; these institutions are active in advanced research and higher education of engineers, scientists and architects as their fundamental mission.

The National Agency for Higher Education, Stockholm, SE

The National Agency for Higher Education is the central agency that deals with issues affecting universities and higher education institutions in Sweden. The Agency conducts quality audits of higher education, exercises supervision of the higher education institutions, reviews and analyses the higher education system, evaluates qualifications awarded abroad, supports educational innovation and development and also provides information on higher education and encourages student recruitment.

The aim of assessments of the right to award degrees - Masters and Bachelors, as well as vocational qualifications - is to assess an institution’s quality and its standard of education and research.

Joint Stock Company “MotorSich” (MotorSich), Zaporozhie, UA

The history of MotorSich have started a hundred years ago, 12 December, 2007. It was one of the key mechanical engineering enterprises in former USSR responsible for producing the techniques and equipment for agricultural branch of the Soviet Union. In 1953 the factory was the first enterprise in USSR which started the design and development of jet engines; the first soviet jet engines RD-45, RD-500 and supplied facilities were developed there. The famous soviet engine designer, prof. A. Ivchenko, was a chief designer of the enterprise.

The gas turbine engines VK-1500, VK-2500 was installed at the helicopters MI and KA and successfully operated for long time.

In 1995 the enterprise was re-organized to the joint stock company “MotorSich”. The engines for all Ukrainian aircraft AN-70, AN-74, AN-148 are producing here.

JSC “Motorsich” was the first enterprise in Ukraine which has established the ex-territorial branch of the KhAI’s faculty. The famous scientists and designers are staff members of the JSC “Motorsich”. The significant part of the graduates of the Aircraft Engines Faculty conducts their master theses under the supervision of the representatives of the JSC “Motorsich”.
