Boosting the knowledge triangle by establishing Innovation Offices in Ukrainian higher education institutions


UNIVERSITY OF ALICANTE (Spain) - UAli

UAli is dynamic public university with a system of innovation support measures: Research promotion and TT Office, international projects office & innovation unit. UAli has vast experience in coordinating EC funded projects (Tempus, Alfa, Edulink, FP 5-7) and Tempus experience in the Eastern Neibouring Area, incl. Ukraine and has lead several projects on topics directly related to innovation and research and technology transfer. Role in the project: Project Coordinator; expertise provider in protection and valorization of University knowledge (including IPR management and protection -UAli is implementing the EC funded IPR-Helpdesk), interantional research cooperation, fundraising, University structrues for knwoledge transfer, building links with stakeholders etc.


CHALMERS UNIVERSITY (Sweden) - CU

Chalmers is a pioneer in Europe in the field of building up efficient innovation systems and find applications in research, including spin-off creation, consultancy, venture capital and IP facilities, etc. Relevant project experience: evaluating and developing regional innovation systems, industryuniversity relationships and cluster activities; transformation of Innovation System in Nicaragua; Scanbalt IP Knowledge Network in Eastern Europe (FP6), PILA- improving IP management in HEIs (ALFA III). Role: provide know-how and training - especially in buliding innovation culture and enforcing strategic links among stakeholders, strategy and action plan development, quality control.


UNIVERSITY OF BOLOGNA (Italy) - Unibo

The University of Bologna, Alma Mater Studiorum (Unibo) is one of the most important HEIs in Europe. Unibo has participated/lead >10 Tempus. The Research Unit (ARIC), supporting the overall organisation of research activities will participate in the project. providing expertise on: (i) Funding, facilitating the access of research groups to funding opportunities, (ii) Knowledge Transfer Office (KTO), devoted to the valorisation of research results through the identification, protection and exploitation of the generated IP.


WORLD UNIVERSITY SERVICE AUSTRIAN COMMITTEE (Austria) - WUS

WUS Austria, founded in 1983 as a national committee of the international NGO World University Service, has since been supporting reconstruction and reform processes in the field of higher education with a regional focus on South-Eastern Europe (SEE). Expertise in creating R&D capacities and instruments for knowledge transfer in Universities, incl. several Tempus projects areas related to this topic (e.g. 145180-2008-AT-SMHES, SCM-C021A05-2005). Project-role: input provider for study, trainings and strategy development, quality control; special added-valule: experts in transformation of former USSR universities.


NATIONAL AEROSPACE UNIVERSITY, UKRAINE (UA) - KhAI

KhAI is one of Ukraine’s leading higher education, training specialists for aerospace industry (11.000 students and 2700 academic staff). 90 research groups are workig in modern laboratories; While KhAI frequently cooperates with other public & private entities, there is no concrete measure assisting researchers or channeling information on these initiatives. The institutional strategy since recently emphasises the need for a structural approach in this regard. Vast experience in EC-funded (Tempus, ErasmusMundus, DEFRA British Council) and cooperation with UAli in 2 Tempus projects (SCM TO26A06, SCM-T049B06-2006).


DONBASS STATE MACHINE BUILDING ACADEMY, UA - DMA

Founded in 1959 DMA today is one of the leading technical universities. 8400 students are enrolled in 6 faculties. Main research areas: engines design, mechanical engineering, computer science, CAD systems, Transport, Electro mechanics, etc. DMA is cooperating with a number of UA industrial companies and other HE / research institutions. Cooperation is managed on a case to case basis and no structural measures have been implemented. The need for a structured approach to research cooperation and technology transfer is one of the major medium-term objectives of the institution.


NATIONAL METALLURGICAL ACADEMY OF UKRAINE, UA - NMAU

NMAU is a technical university providing 35 engineering and management. National status awarded in 1999 reflects leading role in Metallurgy and Material Science education and research. Figures: 14975 students, 359 PhD students, 732 lecturers. Vast experience in international cooperation with public and private sector, incl. Tempus (JEP 27010-2006, JEP 25047-2004). NMAU’s Development Concept emphasises co-operation in innovations, knowledge transfer and entrepreneurship.


ODESSA NATIONAL MECHNIKOV UNIVERSITY, UA - ONMU

ONMU is very active in research and has numerous Scientific-research institutes, labs, scientific centers, at the service of 20000 students & 1800 academic/research staff. ONMU hosts labs for fuel cells, soil geography, medicine synthesis,molecular physics, etc. ONMU holds many awards for quality of research & education. Cooperation in research with many international institutions; High but unexploited potential for R&D cooperation with enterprises or international programmes such as FP7. Extensive experience in international cooperation, including Tempus participation.


CRIMEAN UNIVERSITY (Ukraine), CUH

Is one of the oldest state higher educational institutions, in Crimea with some 6000 students enrolled in 17 specialties, including computer sciences and ICT. CUH has extensive experience in development and realization of scientific programs and cooperation with foreign higher educational institutions and international organizations. Tempus experience: JEP-27249-2006/UKR, CD-JEP-22044-2001.


LVIV POLITECNIC NATIONAL UNIVERSITY, (Ukraine) - LPNU

Founded in 1844, LPNU is the largest university in Western Ukraine with 31000 students, and 1800 academic staff. Research strengths: Computer engineering, Electromechanical and Mechanical Engin., Technology of Organic Substances. In recent years LPNU undertook initiatives to position itself as regional centre of innovation: centre of innovational technologies in education developed, a regional university and research institute’s network recently created; Main obstacles in this process are: a lack of qualified staff, a strong need in modern expertise, not established network of specialized offices.


MINISTRY OF EDUCATION AND SCIENCE (Ukraine) - MES

MES is responsible for education and science in Ukraine. The Ministry has several departments, one of which is responsible for co-ordination of innovation development. Role in the project: participation in strategic planning, quality control, validation, nation-wide dissemination.


State Institute of Innovation technologies and content of education (UA)- SIIT

SIIT is the leading state research organization of the Ministry of Education and Science established by the Order of Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine No 308. The key activities area of the IIT is the implementation of the State politics in the area of education and research on improving the content of education and providing new technodology and mechanisms for innovation studies in higher education. Role in the project: participation in strategic planning, quality control, validation, nation-wide dissemination.


Kiev Chamber of Commerce (UA) - CC

Is the main business advocate in the country and has experience in international cooperation, including Tempus project participation. Role: help to establish links to the business sector; provide information on private sector needs, promoting University research and innovation activities, dissemination.
